Palestinian Refugees and Displaced Persons in Jordan (3 credits)
Instructor: Dr. Abdel Based Athamneh
Course Description:
This course aims at introducing a general but comprehensive knowledge about the Palestinian Refugees and Displaced Persons residing in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The course will cover all aspects--economic, social, demographic, and political. It will also address UN resolutions relating to the issue and prospects for its resolution.
American Policy in the Middle East (3 credits)
Instructor: Dr. Abdalla Battah
Course Description: The course will focus on U.S. post-WWII policy in the Middle East. Topics include American containment of the Soviet Union, reaction to President Nasser and Arab nationalism, support for Israel, support for the Shah of Iran, Nixon's twin-pillar policy, Reagan's strategic consensus, peace-making role, and U.S. assertive policy in the post-Cold War period.
Studies on the Palestine Question (3 credits)
Instructor: Dr. Ahmad Nofal
Course Description: This course will focus on the Palestine Problem and the Arab–Israeli Conflict. Topics covered include zionism, international dimension of the conflict, and the Palestine issue in Arab politics. It will also address the peace process.
Local Government In Arab States (3 credits)
Instructor: Dr. Mohammad Taamneh
Course Description: This course provides students with the basic theoretical background of the political, administrative & legislative systems of Arab Countries. It also tries to discuss the levels (tiers) of the local governments, and their relationships with central government. Revenues & expenditures as well as administrative control will be introduced.
Contemporary Islamic Issues (3 credits)
Instructor: Dr. Ali Jubran
Course Description: This course will cover a number of current topics, including Islam and globalization, Islam and the west, Islamic personal laws, Islamic economy.
Introduction to Islamic Art (3 credits)
Instructor: Dr. Khaled Alhamzeh
Course Description: The course deals with forms of Islamic art and architecture and their developments from the Ummayyad period through the Ottoman Period. Special emphasis will be on architecture, painting, pottery and applied arts.
Studies in Legal Terminology (3 credits)
Instructor: Dr. Lafy Dradkah
Course Description: Legal terminology in English or French, study of the different types of legal rules, sources of law, sources of right and its types and constituent principles.
Introduction to Museums and Tourism in Jordan (3 credits)
Instructor: Dr. Atef Alshiyab
Course Description: This course explores the basic theories of museum work: history, mandate, roles, organization, and the interaction of the various museum activities. The course covers in addition to history and archaeology museums other kinds of museums such as the natural history and science museums. This course will also examine the development of tourism in Jordan; the legal environment of tourism; and the economic, cultural and environmental role of tourism. Students will visit different Museums in Jordan.
Field Archaeology (Excavations) in Jordan (3 credits)
Instructor: Dr. Zeidoun Al- Muheisen
Course Description: This course provides field training for the students on the methods and techniques used in surveying and excavating of archaeological sites, documentation of sites and materials in–situ, conservation of archaeological materials, packaging, handling and transportation. This will be done through field visits to archaeological sites excavated by Yarmouk University.
Studies in Jordanian Society (3 credits)
Instructor: Dr. Abdalkaleg Kotatneh
Course Description: The focus will be on all aspects affecting Jordanian society--historical, developmental, political, economic, informational, educational, health, legal, family and demographic. It incorporates visits to a number of developmental institutions in Jordan.
Arab Culture and Society (3 credits)
Instructor: Dr. Mahmoud Na`amneh
Course Description: This course investigates the current issues and topics related to Arab culture in light of globalization. It covers the major socio-cultural and political transformations and changes that have taken place in the Arab societies and cultures over the time. It also examines the cultural diversity existent in the different parts of the Arab world.
Current Arab Economic Issues (3 credits)
Instructor: Dr. Said Alhallaq
Course Description: The main aim of this course is to analyze current Arab economic problems (agricultural, industrial, technological) the major strategies to overcome these problems in an era of globalization.
Soccer Fundamentals (2 credits)
Instructor: Staff (NDY)
Course Description: This course is geared toward recreational soccer. Participants will learn fundamentals of playing soccer, the world's most popular sport. They will learn the game's rules, strategies and techniques. The course will combine theory with practice. Students will be expected to bring with them appropriate attire and an outdoors soccer shoes.
Special Topics (2 credits)
Instructor: Dr. Abdalla Battah
Course Description: This will center on a series of weekly lectures & seminars offered by invited Jordanian and American scholars and officials. Topics will be on current issues relating to Jordan, the Middle East, and American-Jordanian relations.
Independent Study Abroad & Research
Students who are only interested in doing independent study and research in Jordan under the supervision of a university professor, should contact Prof. Abdalla Battah for details on the process and cost. This applies to students who might be taking independent study courses at their home institution or those who might be working on their MA or Ph.D. theses or to researchers who might be writing scholarly articles or books related to Jordan or the Middle East. Details may be tailored to the needs of the applicant.
